Stage 5 of Chronic Kidney Disease

Also known as end stage renal disease (ESRD) with

glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 15 ml/min or less.

At this stage of CKD kidneys have lost most of their ability to function effectively, and eventually dialysis or a kidney

transplant is needed to live.

Symptoms of stage 5 CKD

  • Loss of appetite
  • Being tired
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Being incapable to concentrate
  • Itching
  • Swelling, especially around the eyes and ankles
  • Muscle cramps
  • Making little or no urine
  • Tingling in hands or feet
  • Changes in skin color
  • Increased skin pigmentation

Kidneys are unable to take out waste and fluids from the body, toxins assemble up in the blood.

Normal Kidneys also performs other functions but in this stage they are no longer able to, such as regulating blood

pressure, producing the hormone that helps build red blood cells and activating vitamin D for healthy bones.

In stage 5 CKD, patient will need to  seek nephrologist immediately.

The doctor will help you in deciding the best treatment option.

Dialysis for people with stage 5 CKD

  1.  Hemodialysis: This treatment can be done in a hospital or a patient’s home with assistance from a care partner. A dialysis machine removes a small quantity of a patient’s blood through a man-made membrane called a dialyzer, or artificial kidney, to clean out toxins that the kidneys are unable to remove. The filtered blood is then returned to the body.
  2. Peritoneal dialysis (PD): Different from Hemodialysis, PD is a needle-free treatment, and a care partner is not required to help during treatment. PD can be performed at home.

Kidney transplant

Another treatment option is a kidney transplant. If you wish to cure a kidney, a kidney transplant is the best option. Talk to your doctor about this. And begin with procedures ASAP.

Diet for people with stage 5 CKD

Diet for dialysis patients is a very crucial part of treatment. On the basis of dialysis treatment and your lab test results, your dietician will help in creating a meal plan based on your needs.
